Fully handpaint tileable - Stone Tiles

Project type

Tileable

Date

Februrary 2024

For the floor tiles, I already did the albedo based on the sculpt for my Wayfinder fan environment project. But I wasn't entirely happy with the overall look of that one. So, based on the already painted albedo, I started over with the normal map.
To help me out, I bake on a plane a kind of atlas with spheres of different heights. It will give me a reference normal map from which I can pick the color value for my own one. Then I paint the Normal value to match my albedo.

Now that the tileable is done, I import it into Unreal Engine. I then create my own shader to render the tileable. Using Nanite tessellation and vertex paint, it allows me to put the sand where I want it with vertex paint, to control the amount of height, as well as the transition between the two textures, and how one texture affects the height of the other.
